Some of my favorite memories from when I was younger was learning the choreography from the videos of artist such as Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson. Although I never danced in a studio growing up, dance always had a piece of my heart.
After graduating from high school and struggling to find what I wanted to study, I decided to take a chance and study Dance Performance at Northern Illinois University where I studied under Paula Frasz, Randy Newsom, and Dr. Carter. I was a late bloomer to formal training and took classes with those who had danced all their lives so often times I felt discouraged. I danced with and choreographed for a campus Hip Hop group named Rhythm Nation, where I found my confidence and sisterhood. Lack of confidence got the best of me, and I eventually earned my degree in Early Childhood Education.
Still longing to dance, I searched for adult classes and found one 45 mins away. I eventually was hired as an instructor. It was then that my daughter Rayne started taking classes. I had the pleasure of dancing with her as well as teaching and coaching her on the studio's national award-winning dance team. I wanted to share dance with adults as well, so I found Zumba in 2012 and decided to become an instructor but my heart still longed for something else.
The more women I met through Zumba, the more I realized that we were all wanting to do the same thing...DANCE! The lack of variety of local dance classes for adults made that difficult, so I knew I wanted to create a community that offered more opportunities to dance, build confidence, and create sisterhood!
